I live in Orange County, California just south of LA. Last March I went up for the Santa Barbara International Orchid show and on the way home stopped off at the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate open house. They're known for their temperature tolerant orchids, many of which can grow outdoors here in California along the coast. I've lived in CA for years but first now am experimenting with exotic orchids out of doors.
I picked up a hybrid L. purpurata they had for sale, (var. sanguinea x var. flamea). It bloomed for me in June, quite a surprise. I'm pretty sure that will be the last flowering for a couple years as I divided the plant in two and the new growth isn't looking large enough to flower next summer unless additional growths start up soon.
