I have never tried growing them, but I recently learned that they mostly originate in areas where the soil is very rich in iron, meaning that the trees take it up, and excrete some through the leaves, resulting in higher iron in the orchids' diets when it rains.

The recommendation was to add iron sulfate to the fertilizer solution.

(There I go...thinking about chemistry again.)
