Would the real C. Barbara Kirsch please stand up
Default Would the real C. Barbara Kirsch please stand up

I have acquired a number of neglected orchids and one labelled C. Barbara Kirsch has flowered for me. The flowers are around 2" across and are mid pink with a whitish throat. It has a cluster of three flowers which isn't surprising after having had a near death experience.
Photos I have seen show Barbara Kirsch as having salmon coloured flowers around 3+" diam.
My plant would be a seedling. I have checked with the previous owners who claim it is Babs Kirsch.
Have I got the real thing or one of Bab's siblings?

Barbara Kirsch does come in a few different colour forms, I have both the pink and salmon. I would say you have the real thing.

Thanks for that Warren. Do you know if the various forms have individual names or does this cross pre-date this refinement?

Not to sure on that, the plant was registered in 1952 by Woodlawn's. I can give you the parents if you want. by the way, it's not C. anymore, It's Gur. Barbara Kirch

Thanks Warren, you got the gurrrrrrrrrr... bit right with the name changes.
I had the salmon coloured form years ago and was told the parents were C. Bowringiana and C. Aurentica. I forget unimportant things like my wife's birthday but I remember important things such as orchid names.

All the siblings of Barbara Kirsch are also Barbara Kirsch. That's why there can be a great deal of variation between plants with the same hybrid grex.

Kip beat me to it but I'll add to his comment. All offspring of the same two parents are the same grex. They would be siblings, but they would all be Gur. Barbara Kirsch. A batch of seedlings don't come out all the same, especially if we have different color forms of the parents. Crossing the standard forms will yield different results than crossing the alba forms of the same species. But they would all be the same grex if the same combo of parents are used.

Many times growers will assign clonal names or cultivar epithets to distinguish different forms of a cross. These would go in single quotes after the grex name. You might do some research to find which cultivar has the salmon color.
