Default Encyclia alata

This is a division of the plant that started it all for me!

For years, my MIL had an orchid that a friend had given to her when she was moving away. She didn't have a name but was given instructions for it's care. It took a few years but she finally got blooms on it. We decided to bring the plant to the local society to see if anybody could tell us what it was

The moment we walked in, one of the most knowledgeable people (didn't know it then but I certainly know it now ) came over and said "Very nice Encyclia alata!"

It has since been judged and is indeed E alata.
My heroine!

That's about the time I totally lost my mind

Once we learned that these plants need to be repotted every so often, I had no choice but to take care of that task for my dear MIL, right? What a great time to take a little piece, right?

Here she is today, blooming on three spikes as her hello

It is so lovely and the fragrance is wonderful

This is a great species and you've got two spikes! Great growing! Mine is in spike right now so I should be able to smell that great scent soon enough!

Very nice plant Sue. I wish I could do as well with my Encyclias.

Nice pics, and great story! I love hearing about growers' turning points and inspirations.

I bought this species from TikiGeorge and it's in spike too. It'll be my first time seeing (and smelling) this one in person. I hope it's as nice as yours.

I'm sure I will. But it will never again be just an E. alata to me - it will be "the one that got Sue hooked"!

It's so pretty, and 3 spikes too! Great growing! It's nice to see the orchid that started it all.
