Peckhaviensis cares?
Hi Terri,
I got a peckhaviensis a couple of weeks ago. New leaves are growing It doesn't seems in too bad shape, but I have the same kind of "death spot" on 2 leaves (exactly like yours). I was curious to know what you have done (watering, mounting, temperature, fertilizer, etc.) to save that orchid? I did search for care sheets or such for the peckhaviensis on the Web without much success. Thanks! Take care, Fred |
Hi Fred. You're going to love this plant. Not only is it beautiful but fragrant too.
The "death spots" are severe sunburn. My son left it in his backyard last year and did not do a very good job of keeping track of it. I repotted as soon as I rescued it from him. I've been growing it on the warm side (for me that's the top shelf of the grow rack in the house), and pretty bright. My rack sits in a southwest facing bay window and I also supplement with T5 grow lights. I feed 125ppm N of MSU at every watering. I water weekly unless it's beastly hot or the plant is in bloom, then it gets a bit more mid week. That's it for my culture. Hope this helps! :) |
I have a few for you in spag & bag....just too bad you're too far away to save them for me. Don't have the heart to just pitch them, your son's plant looked good compared to my 3 though!! Congrats, good work.

Hi Terri!
Thanks for the quick reply :) I just come back from the book store and I found that the spots were sunburns too :) Thanks for the other information too. One last question: is it better suited for a pot (I re-potted it in a cedar basket when I got it) with a mixture of cedar shaving and perlite; or mounted on a bark plate? Otherwise I have more or less the same setting than you have: south windows, additional T5 bulb (6400k with 2500 lumens) (necessary because we only got 4 days of sun in July, and there are some trees adding shades). Otherwise they are mounted on a cedar rack (built like the generic cedar mounts that let air flowing through all shelves.) and a lot of air circulation that come from a vent of the forced air system of the house (directly under the shelves). Take care |
You've done an excellent job and that's a beautiful flower. Saves are so rewarding. Funny thing...I just posted a recovery update and went to new posts and saw your update.

Fred, I think this plant would do equally well in pot or mounted. You'll just have to water more often on a mount.
June, I just finished reading about your very impressive Psychopsis save. It looked far worse than this one. Very nice job! |
Nice save, Terri! Beautiful and fragrant!!!! Can't ask for any better than that! :)
