My Intrepid Voyage into Orchid Deflasking....Laelia purpurata var. carnea (victim #1) Female
Default My Intrepid Voyage into Orchid Deflasking....Laelia purpurata var. carnea (victim #1)

Hey all....

I went a little crazy one day and decided that I was ready to jump in and de-flask some orchids. I thought to myself, "I have killed enough plants to know what I need to do to keep them alive" (yes, serious logic there, my friends) so I decided to visit Troy Meyers and in a bout of lunacy, I reserved some flasks (read, like 100 or so). Troy, who evidently believes that I CAN do this, generously sent me two flasks for a small fee.

In any event, here are the results thus far. My first victim, i.e. orchid, that I recieved was a Laelia purpurata var. carnea 'Hihimanu' x self. After frantically running around like a chicken without a head, an emergency trip to Home Depot for more moss, several stiff drinks later (just kidding!!), and countless evenings obsessing (are my seedlings warm enough?????? Have they grown a millimeter since yesterday--I think so!!!)

Here they are...the first batch of my babies...... (wink)

Thanks guys!!!

To answer your question, I have a second compot of the Laelia purpurata, 3 compots of Cattleya walkeriana 'Pendentive', 1 compot of Laelia anceps var. alba and one compot of Eulophiella Elizabethae.

I should be getting soon a flask of Sobralia bouchei and another one of Cattleya loddiggesii var. alba.

Totally OT but every time I read your nickname I think: PeeWeeLovesOrchidsToo :-)

Good growing and thanks for sharing. In what conditions do you keep those tiny plants and how do you water the terra cotta pots with moss?

Nicole

Ha. That too. Books are an obsession of mine.

The compots (except for the Eulophiella) were on the windowsill of my terrace. I decided to move them outside about 2 weeks ago, but then I had to move them back inside because the moss was getting way too soggy due to the rain. And, I'm not home at the time it usually starts pouring. So, they are back on the windowsill. They are getting slightly less than cattleya sun there but when they were outside, they were with my catts.

I spray the pots, checking them daily to feel whether the moss is wet/damp or not.
