Epy. Serena O'Neill
Also purchased at the RVOS show in April. This one called me for 2 days before I finally bought the last one. My fear was it would get to big. It's a cross of Epicyclia Mabel Kanda x Encyclia cordigera. No scent that I can detect, but I just fell head over heals in love with the flowers. So much for buying plants in a logical manner instead of "Oooo, pretty flower.....must buy!".

Terri, that is a great clone. Thanks for posting a picture.
I hope mine turns out as beautiful. l could not resist it either last year when I saw the sample plant with stunning fragrant bloom. I was hoping that it would be smaller than Mabel Kanda, the mother. When I took it home I noticed the leaves were full of pitting so I placed it in water culture, and in isolation with not the best light. Well it has produced a beautiful new growth with burgundy red tinge, great roots, and seems to be budding. So it it is a very adaptable plant.
We must have been on the same wavelength because I also bought the Chacao Anachelium, Prosthechea chacaoensis which is reputed to have the fragrance of Lily-of-the-valley, daphne, and roses.

So Maria, now that you've had yours for a year, how big is it? LOL, I can absolutely verify the scent of the Psh. chacaoensis has all of those elements. It's really quite nice. I haven't detected any scent yet on this Epy. Maybe I'm just not catching it at the right time of day.

About the size of Serena, I really can't judge it since I chopped off all the roots when I placed it in water culture so it had quite a setback. I expect the spike to be at least 2 feet eventually but the plant hopefully will be manageable and it is very attractive. It seems to increase fast since the new growth already has 2 pups. I usually divide my plants when they get too big. I even keep a Sharry Baby in a vase and when it outgrows it I just cut it back to fit and give the division away. Growing it either in water culture or S/H seems not to cause a setback because of the profusion of healthy roots. It blooms at least X2/year with double spikes anyway. The fragrance of some of my plants seems to take days to develop and be gone by 10AM so you would have to try in the mornings too. A good example is Leptotes bicolor the best fragrance I noticed is 6-8AM and by 9Am it smells like paint remover.

LOL Paint thinner? Ewww! As long as the vegetative part of the Epy doesn't get any taller I'll be fine with it. I'll just remember to follow your lead and be ruthless when repotting! Divisions for all of my friends!

Terry
I want to show you what my scruffy looking plant did in 1 year in water culture. On the left is new growth with 2 pups and all new roots after I chopped off all the old roots.

The blooms are so pretty! I really like it. And who ever said that orchid buying had to be logical?

Growing Epy. Serena O'Neill in Water
Aloha,
I have this plant with not much luck growing it. New growths appear then die. I would be interested to know what is required to grow it in water. Can I just put it in a vase?! I know this original post is old but hopefully you are still on the board. Mahalo for any info you, or anyone, can provide.
