Stewart Crosses

Is there a way to find out what cross was made to make a named and numbered variety of a Stewart cross?

OrchidWiz encyclopedia has that kind of information, but it is an expensive data base.

If you have one cross in which you have an interest I will try to find the info for you.

The tag reads Bc. Magic Dreams or possibly "Majic", I can't tell positively since the tag is scratched.

On the back it reads Stewarts 19222.

Tracing all its ancestors would be work as it has 42 ancestors over 9 generations.

The Stewarts 19222 is a growers control lot number that does not mean anything to anyone except the grower.

Debs, you can also find the parents of every cross at Royal Horticultural Society - Plants: The International Orchid Register and it's cheaper than orchidwiz

The problem with RHS is that the slightest misspelling will fail to find anything. Entering Dreams rather than Dream will get a failure.

Also many parts of a name can not be entered on RHS ' "" / and others are all restricted characters in a computer data base.

You have to have a decent knowledge of the database to use it. It fails for me more times then it works so I stopped using it.

Doubly bad since they have changed so many family names. At least OrchidWiz will display the plant and the new name when you enter the old name or when you do not enter a family name at all.

I don't recommend spending the money for OrchidWiz unless you have a specific need for it, but I would never consider RHS free with all the time wasted trying to use it.

never paid for it, and never spent more than few seconds searching for a reference there...
