Leptotes bicolor, water culture

Another mermaid, seems to love water culture. First blooming seedling last year 4 flowers, this year 12, same time. In water culture less than 2 years. I love the pollinia on this one.

To grow orchids in water seems to me like an incredible feat. I would love to give it a try. Is there one particular plant or variety that you would recommend?

That's very nice! My Den in water culture is doing very well right now, after a bit over a month in water. I would love to try with my Leptotes bicolor like you did, but it is firmly attached to its mount!

Jerry, I have discussed water culture with several people, and it seems that Catts are the best to start with, as they adapt very easily to water culture. It works very well to rescue orchids from the brink of death (like my Den).

I really appreciate all the encouragement since I have lost a many orchids in the last 30 years of trying to grow orchids in the house with very low humidity in the Winter. So this started out of frustration for orchids drying up or rotting if I gave them enough water in organic media. Now I have no organic media at all. Everything, including my bromeliads and house plants are either in water culture or Semi Hydro in lecca. I don't think I would have ever tried this if I had a greenhouse or could grow in Florida or the tropics.

Jerry, it seems from your albums that you are successful in growing a variety of orchids very well. I would also be concerned about mosquitos if I were to grow them outdoors. I woke up one night dreaming of mosquitos and found that they were biting me. A female must have snuck in through a loose window screen and took advantage of the wonderful culture media.

I am glad your dendrobium is doing well. I don't remember any dendrobium I have tried that did not do well. Since the mother plant of a Dendrobium hybrid in lecca got too heavy for me to lift I gave it away and kept a keiki I put in water culture 5 months ago. To my surprise it is blooming now with much larger flowers.

i love good stories; and this certainly is one.
if i did not see it with my own eyes, you have a nobile in water culture. a plant that in my experience needs a dry rest period.
but it,s working for you.
i will have to try this waterculture.
