Epidendrum nocturnum
This is also a plant I have long wished. I bought it last year from a nursery that assured me that the flower opens. It is a really wide spread species. We also have it here in my region, plenty of them actually. They grow everywhere like a weed... but they are all cleistogamic forming as many pods as the number of buds on the flower stem, right before the flowers should open (which explains the numerous population of this plant!).

I bought a little one through mail order a few months ago. It looked a little raggedy on purchase, but it already has two new growths, so I'm holding out hopes that it likes its new home. I hear the fragrance is divine!

I can see why you wanted it, it's beautiful! I like the lip, it looks like a sword! And you have nice weeds in your region, I wish ours looked like that.

Thats an amazing looking flower! However, this thread is posted as Epi. nocturnum and the pics are labeled as carpophorum. Is this one of those species whoe name is constantly being changed?

To Steve,
The species is correctly E. carpophorum. It is a close relative of E. nocturnum and I have seen them side by side in Guyana. In E. carpophorum you can't see the inflorescence - it is hidden by the folded leaf base. In E. nocturnum the inflorescence is always clearly visible above the terminal leaf. There are also a number of other species that have been lumped together under a "highly variable" E. nocturnum.
