Default Hwks. Sogo Doll x C. violacea

The hybridizer sure mis-calculated the possibilities on this hybrid. The tag reads: Ivory to pink, tipped red, lip magenta. That is not what I see here. Anyhow, the flower is nice. This is the first bloom on this seedling. Growing seedlings can be a lot of fun but they can also be very disappointing.

The other plant is a Phal. of course, and it is one that I tried to grow like the Japanese by having the spike trained upright and then cascade downward. I would have been successful had the flower count been greater. The next time I will use a plant that produces a lot of flowers. The flowers on this plant are a huge 5 1/2" which is probably the reason there are not a lot of them.

I certainly would not have been disappointed in that Catt seedling Jerry! It's very pretty. Perhaps not what was expected but pretty none the less! Pretty Phal too. I have a giant one similar but it's spike is so stout it won't cascade no matter how many flowers it carries. It forms a very nice L shape.

Surely nothing to be disappointed by! Might not be what was described but oh so lovely anyway!

The Phal is stunning too!

Terri, I trained this one by attaching a string that does not cut into the end of the spike, after several buds have formed. The other end of the string is secured to the staging . As the spike grows, you gently tighten up the string and eventually the spike will cascade downward for a beautiful display.

Aha! I was thinking along the line of somehow attaching a weight to the end of the spike, like the do to a steers horns. The weight slowly pulls the horns down as they grow. That way they can't harpoon each other. Your idea seems much more reasonable for a plant though. Thanks for the tip!
