Epidendrum ciliare (Mexican ecotype)

This is a widespread species, the distribution going from Mexico down to Brazil. The Brazilian ecotype is way shorter than the Mexican, which can easily reach 20-24" (50-60 cm) in height. The flowers are the same in both ecotypes, are fragrant in the dark and are as large as 4" (12cm) across.

Yes, Dana, but it is fragrant in the dark only, like Brassavolas.

I've never seen the Mexican ecotype. The plant itself is quite different from the common ones available here.

You are right, Pheli, the two ecotypes are very different, especially in height. I also grow the shorter, Brazilian type, the flowers show no differences, but the plant...!

Two or three friends also have this Epi and sadly we can't make it bloom more than one time a year, Sun!
