Free LC. Schilleriana Surprise
About 6 months ago I ordered a few plants from an ebay seller and especially wanted a Phal. Schilleriana. Well, the plants were very nice and I was happy except that I received an LC Schilleriana (C intermedia var. 'orlata' X L purpurata) instead of the Phal. I double checked to make sure I didn't make a mistake--didn't--and notified the seller. He immediately shipped me the Phal Schilleriana and no cost to me, insisted that I keep the LC, even though I offered to pay for the really nice young plant, and all he wanted was for me to keep him in mind for future orchid purchases. Wow! Well now it's nearly 6 months later and the LC is blooming. It opened 4 flowers that are pale pink with the purple lip. 1 & 1/2 weeks later the second group of buds opened. They were a nice minty green with the white/purple lip. I didn't recall the others opening this color and then fading to the pink so I correctly assumed that there are 2 different seedlings in this pot. They look to be a single plant. What a nice second free surprise! I like the green one best.

Sounds like a great seller! I wish all of them were like that. The blooms are gorgeous, they look really nice together in the same pot. I love surprises like that.

Wow! Sounds like a great seller! I like the greenish one best too! These are the kinds of sellers that I need to know about. I'm just about to take the plunge into the world of online ordering this summer (hopefully) and I want to know about any sellers like this!

Could this be influenced by some sort of environmental factor?

I don't know why it is what it is, but if you look carefully at the picture, there is more than just a color difference between the two. The petals on the green one are wider and there is sharply defined line between the white and lavender colors on the lip. It is overall a nicer quality flower than the pinkish one. I'm going to separate the two sometime this spring and grow each through another flower cycle. They both had very weak flower stems which I had to stake. I think it may be a flaw because they had more than adequate artificial light. None of my other catts have shown that problem, but this was the first time these seedlings have bloomed. We'll see how they do with some sun this summer.
