Mauro,
Thanks for your long, non-scientist discussion. I actually understood it well, and it has enlightened me to a much better understanding of how new species evolve from older ones, and also as to how the debates can sometimes get going. :D |
What a beauty. How well do you think backcrossing experiments would work in an attempt find out if this one is indeed a hybrid?
Meanwhile, if this plant does have multiple populations, then I guess its time to call this one a species, no matter if it really was a hybrid or not. This is possibly a questions taxonomists struggle with. At what point does a population become a species? Some suggest, that there is no point in assigning binomials to living creatures as we are all in constant change. |
1 question, are the populations of silvana physically located where you would expect a hybrid zone between C. grandis and C. warnerii?

Beautiful!!! A real show stopper :D

Great looking plants and flowers! I have to say that if you were to tell me it was a hybrid between L. grandis and C. warneri, I would totally agree. I mean, the petals and sepals are very thin like grandis and the lip has the dark 'splotch' that is pretty characteristic of warneri. This is an interesting case for taxonomists!!! Can genetic analysis solve this case once and for all?

So gorgeous!!!
