What can I say, I have excellent self-control. That's really saying something, since I only have a handful of chids at the moment that I'm constantly smothering with attention.

I think my underwatering came from drowning a cactus when I was 6 or 7. Since then I've been too scared to overwater! I grow a lot of drought tolerant plants so I'm used to having a light hand on the water.

I may have drowned a couple Rex begonias a few years ago, but honestly, I have no idea WHAT went wrong with them!

I'll work on not underwatering and you work on not overwatering and we'll meet in the middle!

Dear Stitz,

It is an educated guess since all the modern E. radicans hybrids are tetraploid. It makes the plants more compact and the flower last longer. The shape of the floral segments of the NOID makes me think it is such a hybrid.

Somewhere recently I saw a superb exhibit by Cal-Orchid of nothing but these new hybrids. Quite spectacular and I think theyare the major grower of these things on the mainland.

Hope that helps, Eric

Geez Heather. I was trying to picture you growing cacti underwater. Like underwater basket weaving joke you know? I need more coffee. It is morning here.

Hehe, I gave up on desert cacti. Forest cacti are much less hostile and just as pretty. Especially my 3' x 3' epiphyllum, which I need to get rid of because it's just too big! I'll save some cuttings though so I can still enjoy the flowers. 8 inch golden waterlily shaped beauties!

"Geez Heather. I was trying to picture you growing cacti underwater."

I love Epiphyllums but I only have one. It spends all winter under the bench in the greenhouse, gets watered a little from March and the buds form in May. They are iridescent red and 6 inches across. I have mentioned it before on OB because it drips pink nectar which is yummy! It is called E.ackermannii. I even tried taking time lapse pics of these huge flowers opening. The plants do get very big though

Heather, I think that's the same one mine is. At least the way you described it and from the looks of the picture, that's what my mother in law's looked like last summer (mine is a cutting from hers). Your picture is beautiful!

Quiltingwacko - I'm sorry...it seems we hijacked your thread.
