Default Encyclia ID, anyone?

I was just toolin' around the internets, and ran across this photo of an Encyclia: Encyclia on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Anyone happen to be able to identify it? If it's not too huge, I SIMPLY MUST FIND ONE!!

Many thanks for any help.

Encylica prismatocarpum. I've also always liked that one, and recognized it from your attached photo. I believe they get pretty big, which is why I don't have one either.

Wow! Good call, Stephen. Tho you are right too about the size. IOSPE says "...this large-sized species..." Well, if I somehow am gifted with a lot more growing space...

Yep, I feel your pain, re: severe growing space restrictions. So many tall-growing species I'd love to try, but they just don't fit under the darn lights. Maybe someday I'll marry rich and get a greenhouse.

Encyclia prismatocarpa (or Prosthechea prismatocarpa or Pararica prismatocarpa) can grow as tall as 40-45cm. It is not too large, but also not too small. I posted mine the other day, it is a large plant but it's an old, undivided specimen.

Awesome, Mauro! I must have missed your previous post. What a specimen it is! Really gorgeous. For now, I'll just have to over your photos.

Hi Yvan,

Stephen was correct in the ID, but it has recently been reclassified as Prosthechea prismatocarpa. The plants are considered to be medium sized, about 20 inches when fully grown.

The good news is that they do bloom small. I have one with three small pseudobulbs in a 4" pot (it could probably stay in the same pot for another year or so before outgrowing it), and it bloomed last summer, so if you're really interested, you could get one and conceivably keep it small and still have it bloom.

Mauro...yours is fantastic!

Hey hey! Thanks, David, for your input. How tall would you say yours is at its young stage?
