Cattleya type with black leaf spots

I am a new orchid hobbyist. I have a Dial Snowflake x B. nodosa that has started to get yellow on tip of leaves and black spots are starting to appear on leaves. Is this plant diseased or what is happening with it. Thanks for any help and or comments. Dennis in Pensacola

From what I can see it looks like you have scale, look under the leaf that is turning brown on the end and see if you have a white mass under there.

Hey Dennis, I have had that problem with a few catts. as humidity in the south is high. It is usually the start of leaf rot. Physan 20 usually takes care of the problem for me. You usually have to treat is quickly or it will spread. Also, you can try cinnamon. Just sprinkle it on the area and it acts like a natural antiseptic. It will also dry the area. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. I am new at this and want to keep my plants healthy. Where can i purchase the Physan 20.

It can usually be found at most garden centers. It also goes by the name Consan 20. You just reconstitute it accordig to directions and put it in a spray bottle. I usually mist all my plants with it once a week. This has really kept the black rot in check. Somehow it seems to be worse in the winter. Try the cinnamon, too until you can get the Physan. It works like a charm!

TRks for the info on Physan 20. Are you talking about powdered cinnamon or fresh. If powdered do I just rub it on the effected leaves.

Hey Dennis,
You can use the powdered kind found at the grocery. In looking closely at your pictures, it really looks like the leaf with the brown dried end was damaged somehow. It also looks like a leaf near it was trimmed at some point. The cinnamon will work great for the dried leaf. Just trim the damaged part/yellow part and apply cinnamon to the exposed edge. It will seal it and keep the yellow from spreading. The physan should arrest the problem on the lower leaf. You can just sprinkle cinnamon on it, too, if you want.
