be interesting to see if, after it is done blooming, those growths continue to grow more as keikis would ... send out roots, etc

I've used Superthrive for years and never had something like that on a cattleya - strange indeed.

I know the answer why they turned out to be flower spikes

I noticed the cutters in the background

I really don't think SuperThrive had anything to do with this happening...just a freak of nature thing

Hi Susan, When I bought mine (2007), they looked that way before blooming.
If you take a close look at this year's blooms, they started the same way but all was wonderful when blooming. No additives were used, either. I call it my double layer blooms. Not sure why, but who cares!

Paul, I wondered about that too. No roots yet. Roger, that was funny, "cutters in the background." However I really was thinking about cutting the weird growths off. I changed my mind when I saw the spikes. Here is a pic of the same plant last Feb. Very normal looking except the spikes were really long. I guess we will never know what caused it.

I am not a horticulturalist(?) but I don't that superthrive has any effect like you show here. I use superthrive with every watering with many different orchids and have never had such a reaction. Just a freak of nature. Keep us posted as the spikes grow and bloom.

Hi, Warren here from Australia. I had the same problem with the same plant here, after looking around my other Cat's I found the same effect on a few, now for what I think was the cause of this, fertilzer is the problem. What I think happened is your (my) plants were about to put out new growth's when the fertilzer was applied thus giving this effect. No problems !
