Unhappy divided Schombs... what to do?
Thumbs down Unhappy divided Schombs... what to do?

I recently bought some Schombs... and love them! Most are doing really well; creating new bulbs, spikes, and roots. All plants are mounted.
However I'm concerned about 2 of the plants, a Schomb exaltata and Schomb tibicinis. Both of which where divisions off bigger plants. Roots of both plants look rotted. These plants had some sphang on the mount, so I took the sphang off today. I think I'm going to redue waters as if it was dormant, and just spray it water with superthrive once a week, instead of dunking it, until it shows some growth. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Maybe use some peroxide????

thanks for everyone's help!! I know they are going to sulk for a while, but I don't want to lose them!

Hmmm, wondering if you got my old tibicinis? I recently sold a huge one to a vendor who sells on ebay and I believe he divided and mounted them. Is this where you bought yours from?

I wouldn't worry about this. Like Cattleyas, (and most orchids), they'll grow new roots when new growths begin in spring througout summer. I have always kept these dryer than Catts no matter what time of year but especially, the cooler months. I'd also give it a lot of light and patience. You'll start to see better results when it starts warming up.

No, I bought mine from a guy who was getting rid of his greenhouse. One was an extra, free to me, the other was too expensive, so he said he would give me a division. About that time, I found out that Schombs don't like to be divided, but I rather have them and them take a year or 2 to bloom then not have them at all So I'm not upset about the purchase, I just don't want them to die.

Thanks for your input

Bellina

I cut out or scrape rot with razor blade or scalpel, treat all rot in orchids and repeat until it is under control.

1. Drugstore peroxide straight from the bottle pour on or use cotton tipped applicator. If rot extensive or spread deep,
2. Gentian violet 1% usually applied with Qtips. We use it for people to treat fungal infections when other more fancy drugs do not work. (It may stain anything purple permanantly, so be careful.) I have not noticed any ill effects on orchids yet after 5 years of heavy use.
