Brand new species - Epidendrum puniceoluteum F.Barros & F.Pinheiro
Fábio de Barros and Fábio Pinheiro have described this species as recently as 2006. It was found growing in the wild in an Island off the coast of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, and only in that Island. It is a terrestrial, tall reed stem Epidendrum type. The three projected yellow horns in front of the column make this a very distinctive species. The species has been published in Hoehnea (São Paulo), v. 33, p. 247-250, 2006 and, for some reason is not in the international databases yet.
Also, a search for Epidendrum puniceoluteum on the Internet will bring no images of this impressive red species, so we're having it here first hand. Enjoy!

Wow, that is impressive. Mauro, if you ever get your hands on the primary literature in English, please post it in the scientific matters forum. The discovery of a new orchid is definitely a scientific matter.
Heck, you should do it even if it is in Portuguese.

That is a gorgeous orchid! I wish this beauty was already in cultivation, I want it! There are so many beautiful epidendrums. A guy in my plant breeding course is describing 2 new epidendrums in costa rica which are really beautiful too. I'd love to do his work!

Tindo, I was talking with Marcos Campacci today and he is sending me the original description. It is in Latin, of course, but it is common that the technical description is accompanied by author's comments on the species. Let me see whether it is in Portuguese or English, or both and I'll be posting it as soon as I receive it. |
