Default Help me identify my new orchid

My son bought me an orchid for my birthday and he said he must have lost the tag as it was tagged. He did take a picture of one that had already been in bloom. My new arrival was with 3 buds but one had broken on the way home. It looks like its in the cattleya alliance family.

Also, my son found the bud picked it open and I found reproductive seeds just under the anther cap. I placed them in a ziploc, moistened, not sure where to go from this point. It's also great to add, he bought his first chid a "lady slipper"... That's a my boy

What a good son you have! Can he go back to where he bought it and ask them what the name is? It would be a shame for you to lose the ID. Also tell him that he picked a nice paph. You have him well trained!

That cattleya is gorgeous. That's about all the insight I have, though

Good luck ID'ing it!

You don't have any seeds, unfortunately. You probably have pollinia, which would normally be under the anther cap. To get seed, you have to place those pollinia (or at least one) on the stigmatic surface, which is behind the pollinia on the column (there is a wall between them). Orchids are pretty cool...

The actual seed of this type of orchid is very small, almost dustlike.

Isn't it great when the kids start to get interested in what we're doing! My son has a few 'chids' and gets a new one at each show we go to. Unfortunately at the last show the vendor he wanted to talk to the most our local "Vanda Lady" wasn't able to sell at the show. Boy was he disapointed!

Yes, I did ask him to make a trip back to the shop to get a name, but it always hits me when one asks a kid to do something, think about "Family Circus" when the father asked the kid to go get something in the garage he made gazillion of stops before getting there...but never to late he wont tell me the place until after the holidays, bet I wont be shaking his present

The paph is a beauty and will help him along .. hummmm .. it starts with the first purchase...
