One thing that heavily influences the color of orange and red flowers is temperature. The acanthocyanins that cause the color develop more intense color in cooler temperatures. In my experience that is especially true of flowers that have Soph. coccinea in their genetic mix.
Ron, could that be why my Paph. Magic Lantern was paler than most others I've seen? I was thinking it was just genetics. It was up on my top shelf, which is my warm spot, and I was very disappointed in the color of the bloom. Maybe this year I'll move it down to the bottom shelf when it starts spiking and see what happens.
Bolero, that bloom is just gorgeous! The color is just amazing!
