Question Catts in Bud??

Everyone I have several Catts mounted and I noticed something I am not sure of. Does anyone out there have any photos of a Catt in bud or sheath?

Would be interested to see some photos..

Hi Sheridan! I can try and take some pictures tomorrow. But some catt's will produce a bud without a sheath and some will produce a sheath without a bud....or so I thought that it could be both ways....I could be completely way off though so we will so what others have to say and share!

Hey there Becca, the reason I am asking I am looking at two of my mounted Catts and each on is growing what I thought was another leaf out of the center of the first leaf but they are not split like a leaf. Holy smokes could it be nah! but maybe

This would be my first blooms from my catts.

Can't wait to see pictures.

Thanks Sheridan

I have this 1 of the buds just emerging from the sheath. It is always the exciting for the first buds of a plant. Congrats.

And yes those are ants. I keep my chids outside and no matter how hard I try they always comeback!

Becca is right some just pop out buds without a sheath and others grow buds inside a sheath. As she said some sheaths can be "blind" and never grow buds. Sometimes a plant will hold onto a sheath for months before it even thinks about forming buds. I have some of each.

From your description it sounds like you have one that has developed a sheath. Cross your fingers and pray for buds!

Hi Sheridan,

It appears that Catts are pretty notorious for producing sheaths that never develop buds, but don't get discouraged. Because you have a sheath there is potential for bud formation and blooms. The progress from sheath to bud can take a few weeks or several months depending on the plant and sometimes it just never happens. A sheath with a flat profile at the base has not begun producing a bud. Swelling will take place at the base of the sheath when a bud is forming and as it grows you can see it through the sheath. Watching it develop is such a thrill! Good Luck!

Interesting discussion. . .I've been confused too.

I am getting sheaths with nothing in them and have been wondering if I need to do something special to help out? Or mind my own business and just wait. roflol

Question

WOW!! Thank you all for the great Catts are new to me and I had no idea what to look for. I have looked in my orchid book and they never show what the orchid looks like during the bud growth just the flower. Is there such a book showing orchids is several stages of growth?

I have taken two the first is what I think is the sheath and the other is a nubbin type thing at the base of one of the leafs. What do you all think?

Still having trouble with the photos it keeps telling me they are two big. Oh Well here they are.

You're pictures are a little blurry, but I think I know what you're talking about. I get this little green bump of a thing on my chids too. My green bumps have never developed into anything and they eventually dry up. I don't know what they are or what their significance might be.
