The name doesn't solve the mystery
Last weekend I began posting photos of a mystery off season/off color bloom produced by my NOID Catt. that I've had for many years.
First of all I was taken back when I discovered a bud in her sheath because she's typically a winter bloomer.
Then came the next surprise. The blossom barely resembled what she'd formerly produced and she was missing her lovely fragrance. I had no photos of her previous blooms for comparison, but distinctly remembered the way they'd looked and their delicious perfume.
During this period of bewilderment I posted my current photos and concerns to the OB. I was somewhat relieved when she began to emit her fragrance from her unrecognizable blooms.
A few members agreed that the changes might be a result of the heat. We had experienced many weeks of intense heat and drought-like conditions followed by several weeks of primarily overcast skies and lots of rain. The constant rain has caused the temperature to drop 10 to 15 degrees and perhaps the wacky climate confused this plant.
I really wanted to know more about my Noid which was originally purchased as a bare root, and began Googling descriptions of my Catts. previous blossoms. I just knew this one had a distinctive name and was hoping something would trigger my memory. Then I found something that struck me as very familiar. The name Bonanza Queen. I viewed many photos from several Bonanza Queen sites and these depicted the blooms in my memory. In hopes of pinpointing the exact name, I sent a brief e-mail to Sun Bulb asking them if they had ever sold Bonanza Queen anything. They kindly responded and told me that they used to sell bare root divisions of Lc. Bonanza Queen 'Panamint". So now I have a name that matches her previous blooms, and only a theory about the mysterious difference in color.
