Suziep - I went back thru my pictures and wanted to show you my BL Yellow Bird. As shown in the pic. they are rose color when first opening then within a few days they turn bright yellow, w/spotted lip.

The second picture is where they have all turned yellow.

Don, a little bit different, I agree. Mine also has longer spikes that tend to droop over. Perhaps there is a difference in the amount of light (?). It will be blooming again soon. I am very curious about what it will look like!

Thanks Roly for inspiring this discussion!

Have to chime in on this one...

I got one of these in a OB trade a month or two ago. (Thanks, you know who you are ) It was only a small two p-bulb division, but a new growth has matured quickly and has a spike already! I'll snap a few pics when it opens.

Do you all know if these are clones or seedlings? Seedlings will show wide variability which could explain the color differences (Don has a redhead child and Susie has a blond). It could also be that someone re-did that cross using different parents. Interesting...

Bl. Yellow bird has Brassavola nodosa as a parent and is known to be a 'color-changer' ..
(Bl. Richard Mueller is the other parent)
This is also evident with the other B. nodosa hybrids I have/had -
Bc. Maikai 'Mayumi' HCC/AOS (B. nodosa x C. bowringiana)
Bc (Little Stars x Maikai) 'Hawaii'
and
Blc. Haleahi Sunbow (Bc. Maikai x Blc. Golden Tang)

I was under the impression that Bc Hawaii Stars was B. Little Stars x Bc. Maikai. At least that's what the tag says.
Those tags have been wrong before!

Rofleara or Blc. Hawaii Stars = Brassavola Little Stars X Sophrocattleya Memoria Robert Strait

Brassavola Little Stars = Brassavola nodosa X Brassavola subulifolia

Rolfeara is a hybrid genus comprised of Brassavola, Cattleya and Sophronitis.
(Laelia purpurata has now been reclassified as Sophronitis purpurata which is in Sc. Memoria Robert Strait's lineage)

Bc (Little Stars x Maikai) 'Hawaii' is the name of a particular hybrid with a cultivar of 'Hawaii' .. it's grex is a combination of both parents and doesn't have a single registered name as far as I know ..
