Default Cattleya sheath
Hey guys,
I have a cattleya that was given to me sev. yrs. ago; at the time it had a white bloom on it, can't remember if it was summer or fall tho'. It got a sheath a couple of yrs ago but no blooms. Right now it has 2 new growths with a sheath emerging on the newest growth. Will it get buds or is there a possibility that it may not even flower at all? Thanks for any suggestions!

To see if it blooms you'll have to wait and see. The waiting is the tricky part.

Lack of flowering can be attributed to several factors:
  • Not enough light.
  • Insufficient fertilization.
  • Too little temperature fluctuation between day and night.
  • Lack of light/dark period variance. Some orchids need longer or shorter days to trigger flowering.
After 7 years, I would say you plant is mature, so try to improve the first two.

Buds may still form within the sheath.

Hey Dave, not to steal anyone's thunder but I have a very similar problem...and it's driving me, well it's driving me! I have a GH and the catts are up front and sunny. I fertilize everytime I water with either 20-14-13 or 11-35-15, urea-free with minor elements. Mostly I use the 20-14-13 and will switch over to the other soon...I have lots of phals so I try to promote leaf growth now. I do have a 70% shade cloth on the GH...maybe this is my problem. The temps here in Michigan have been 50/60 nite, 70+days

Doc, Doc, Doc ... Too high in nitrogen will impede blooming ... get your Nitro level to 125 ppm .. Check out Ray's calculator to determine what amount you need of the fertilizer you are using .. Fertilizer PPM Calculator

Thanks...I guess I'm going to have to get less lazy and fertilize the catts separately with the lower nitrogen.
