Inherited Schomburgkia - Orchid Board

I recently inherited a Schomburgkia cutting. It came off of a (so I've been told) very healthy and happy plant. This one does not seem to be as happy. I suppose it could just be the shock from having been removed from the parent plant, but I'm thinking there may be more to it than that. I will post up pictures as soon as I get them, but in the meantime....

I've been having a heck of a time finding any information specific to Schomburgkias. Can anyone offer up some information about what types of lighting they prefer and how wet or dry they like to be? I'd appreciate any information you can provide. Links to informative sites would be even better.

I can tell you that schombos don't like to be disturbed so it's going to sulk for a good while .. be patient with it ..
Do you know what kind you have .. there are some that live in arid environments and others that live in monsoonal regions .. that cultural info helps you to take care of them properly

Thanks for the links. The person who gave it to me doesn't know the specifics about it's heredity... but she did have a picture of it in full bloom... and the tree was flourishing on a tree outdoors in Key Largo, FL.

Here is a picture of the plant from which my cutting was taken when it was in bloom.

I will go into the garden today and get a snap shot of the very unhappy looking cutting.

Both are in the subgen Chaunoschomburgkia -

Thank you Dorothy! I really appreciate your help. I've already read through the threads you posted earlier this weekend and I'm glad to see that the yellow color to the blub may not be a bad thing.

Hi CableGirl,

I have recently started collecting schombos and Dorothy was a great help when I was looking to start gathering info about them. If you go to my gallery I have several pics of them either mounted or in cocoa mat lined baskets. They are all living in my pool enclosure except 1 who loves it under my Chinese fern tree. The rest get as much sun as I can give them in the pool area. The ones in the hanging baskets are in a tree firn mix, either with charcoal & hydroton good drainage or only tree firn chunks. (We are getting daily showers so thats important) The others are on cork or wood with a little spag moss. Some I have had for 3 months some 1 1/2 months. Some are yellow others green. Some are crosses others species. You can get hooked on them since they are so cool. I had a thread 'Looking for schomburkia information' and I am now a schombo-convert

Be careful of too much sun while adjusting they will get sunburn

I burned 1 leaf on my latest chid. No coppertone for him. He is under the tree and loving it. Just about everyone is showing new growth. Yippi.
