Cattleya walkeriana var. concolor, nice surprise
First time blooming seedling, nice surprise this concolor variety. The plant is juvenile, but already blooming, though just one flower. It is grown in sphagnum and is doing very well.

Delicate color and beautiful form!
What size pot do you have it in? Will it get much bigger?

Hi Dorothy!
The pot is 5" across. This plant is growing very fast and although not completely mature yet it has three leads and that's why you see it occupying most of the pot. It will get a little higher than this, yes, but not much (one, one inch and a half additional more or less ).

Has growing it in sphagnum given any difficulties, Mauro? I did not realize that cattleyas could be grown in sphagnum (thought it stayed too wet for them). You have a beautiful seedling there. Congratulations.

On the contrary, Steve, growing them in sphagnum makes it easier than in any other substrate. They grow better, stronger, healthier. All you need to do is use clay pots and adjust watering intervals. In the end you need to water less times. I have now 70% of all my orchids grown in sphagnum and plan to put them all in this substrate.

Mauro - how often do you have to repot - That must be quite a chore!
Are they in pure sphag or do you mix in anything additionally?

You even have your large-sized cattleya species (dowiana, labiata, etc.) growing in sphagnum? Wow, there really is some truth in the statement that a person can learn something new every day. I thought planting cattleyas (especially the larger ones) in sphagnum would be the quickest way to kill them.
