Cattleya maxima (not) "Uzhupud" Male
Default Cattleya maxima (not) "Uzhupud"

Greetings once more, everyone!

This year, I bought a cattleya maxima "Uzhupud" (or so I thought) from Ecuagenera as a consolation prize at the Porto show here in Portugal. It was a consolation prize as I was looking for a coerulea, but there were none available for free sale (they were pre-order exclusive, and apparently the same applied to most cattleyas this year). After digging through the pile of plants with the representative of Ecuagenera, this was the only cattleya maxima available, so I ended up buying it anyway, as it looked pretty healthy.

Turns out... Ecuagenera probably made a mistake with the labels; the "Uzhupud" is supposed to be a tipo clone (per the picture on their website and further confirmation directly with them). Honestly? I'm glad for their mistake, ahahah!

So... Please enjoy this cattleya maxima semialba striata definitely-not-"Uzhupud"!

P.s.: there's a second sheath already filling up, so stay tuned for the next spike!

Wow, you lucked out! Send them a photo. They might be able to give you a name.

I am actually waiting for their reply already, ahahah! For now, my best bet is that this plant was a leftover from a previously available semialba striata lot that got mixed with tipos while not flowering and lost its tag (they do have semialba striatas available on their US website, apparently), but once they reply, I'll let you know.

The first flower (the bottom one) had been open for 7 days, the second (the top one) for 5. I am not currently at home, so I can't check if anything changed in the meantime, but the main difference I did notice was the intensity of the veining (the first flower had more intense veins compared to the second, which happened from day 5 to 6). If the flowers are still open when I get back, I'll update you on that; otherwise, when the second spike blooms!

Oh! Then ya, you've definitely got something that isn't a tipo!
