Cattleya nobilior amaliae - habitat
I sat down with Francisco Miranda to discuss the habitat of Cattleya nobilior var. amaliae. This is a part of Brazil that gets so dry butterflies will try to drink water from your eyes because they're so thirsty!!

Thanks! It's definitely a lot more fun to chat with folks than show my collection that's been roasted this summer!

Oh good! This is very timely. I just purchased a bunch of Francisco's walkerianas and nobiliors. So I'll watch this later this evening before I have a chance to kill everything. Thanks, Esteban!

love the video Stephen, was fortunate to catch Francisco when he came to the northeast last year. Do you end up chilling your nobilior in addition to a dry rest?

Yes, my old greenhouse used to lose heat sporadically and temps would get down close to freezing by accident, occasionally. I honestly don't know how much that plays into my blooming success. I watered roughly 2 - 3 x per month during winter, so there could be a decent amount of water stress mixed with cold stress.
My next greenhouse will be consistently warmer, so I'll have to figure out the magic formula and I suspect I'll have to lean more heavily on water stress going forward.

Stephen, this interview was simply fantastic - you both have so much knowledge to share, and those photos told an amazing story! I have a few nobiliors from Francisco since last year and have been patiently waiting for blooms - my semi alba could bloom this spring if I get lucky!
I'm definitely going to need more nobiliors so let's see what he imports in October.
(PS my flask of your coerulea babies are looking AMAZING - hope yours are also growing well!)

Thank you! So far, my little nobilior seedlings are holding up in this crazy heat! I might need to get more as well lol
