Some of my Cattleyas that I have had for a few years have dried up sheaths, too. What causes this? Not enough light, not enough nutrients, not enough water, or something in the plant? Out of three Cattleyas I have in the same location, only one blooms like clockwork every March whereas one of the others has multiple empty sheaths and the other one has never sheathed. They get the same care, same amount of light and same nutrients. They do put out new leaves and roots. Maybe all of their energy is going towards that.
