The red stem means the bud has died and will fall off before opening.
is it possible to just be anthocyanins from high light exposure? I have a cattleya hybrid with very pink flowers (Pot. Hsinying Pink Doll) that had similarly colored flower stems just before opening - flowers lasted 3.5 weeks. Maybe that is the case here?
Does the flower's stem feel soft like it may fall off/have blasted?

Unfortunately not in this case! I suspect the bud would actually fall off if touched, either now or very soon.
