First Brassavola Nodosa Flower Bud - Orchid Board

Although the picture just shows the bud, I received the orchid as a small cutting with four pseudobulbs and no roots in May 2021. It has grown vigorously since then. For a while I've been getting blasted flower buds with every new growth, but this seems to be the first to develop into a sizable bud (unless I jinx it by posting about it). It seems strange in that there's not a particularly long spike here, just a single flower bud growing almost straight from the leaf.

I'm currently in my dorm at college, so a new orchid flower would be a nice surprise for me and my roommate. And at least one other person on campus wants to come appreciate the nighttime scent of the flower when it opens. I will post more pictures when/if it blooms.

Some cultural information: I grow mine in a net pot filled with lava rock and water a few times per week when it needs it. In the summer it received direct sun for about 4 or 5 hours in the morning to early afternoon, and by luck I got a dorm room that faces southeast and gets about the same amount of light. Humidity is probably low in the room, but it is in a windowsill area that resembles a small houseplant jungle, so perhaps local humidity may be higher.

Congratulations! That looks really promising! The spike length is normal - short. Keep us updated!

Good luck! I just bought one from Lowe's a couple of weeks ago. It had one flower stem growing and it seems to be getting longer. I hope it flowers. I replanted it because it was in soil with little bark which I read these orchids did not like...

It opened up last weekend!

I like that the flower has serration on the edge of the lip. To me it looks slightly different from the usual nodosa flower, could this be a variant or hybrid? Either way, I won't complain. The scent at night reminds me of a combination of honeysuckle and jasmine.

I knew the flower didn't look completely nodosa-y. Thanks, I'm glad to finally have an ID on it.

Interesting that the plant with out a flower looks like a normal B. nodosa.

I have Rcv. Jimminey Cricket as well as B. nodosa... Jimminey Cricket has much larger leaves than B. nodosa but similar shape (not quite as terete), sort of B. nodosa on steroids.
