Set back Cattleya. What to do?
Default Set back Cattleya. What to do?

Hi, everyone. Maybe some of you remember my wonderful RLC Dick Smith 'Paradise' that got a terrible bacterial infection on October last year. At the time, I did what I had to, the plant lost quite a few backbulbs and I chanced her pot and media then and there even though there were no roots growing. In those days it dehydrated quite a bit, and a lot of roots were damaged ( ). Ever since I have been watering it, not as often as my actively growing catts, but have been doing it. I've seen no change on it, I sometimes wonder if it has active roots. And it's been a long time with no growth or anything.

What could I do to stimulate growth? I'm afraid if I just wait it'll end up drying out completely. Recently I moved it to a quite warm room with very bright dappled light (it's next to a frosted glass window which receives sun from the morning to noon or a little before that). And I'm thinking of spraying it every now and then, which I know doesn't make a great difference but it can't hurt (I'm also ventilating the room to avoid fungi and bacteria from striking again).

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Stan

Patience, patience. This plant has had a trauma, and orchid progress is measured in years not months. It may take several years for it to recover. If the root system was damaged, it will be living off the reserves in the pseudobulbs (and they will shrivel, of course) until it can produce new growth and new roots. A supplement such as Kelpak may help. But mostly, good care and time.

Dick Smith is easy to grow but it doesn't do well in the sun, I have several and I try to put them in the shade, my climate is hot and I keep them outside where there is a breeze, if the humidity is low a little bit of moss on top will help you recover.

Hi everyone. I wasn't placing this orchid in the sun but rather in dappled light, but I think the misting brought back the infection and it lost two canes. Luckily the infection didn't spread to the rhizome but it did take a very beautiful eye that I thought was eventually going to sprout.

So I just brought it back to where I had it. I was thinking of something like Roberta said, maybe if someone had experience using hormones. But gosh, this was demotivating, so Imma just keep it there with nothing else and just hope for the best.

I appreciate greatly your responses.

May you have a good week,

Stan

If there is any way for you to raise the humidity around the plant without spraying it that could better for it. I think you want high humidity, moderate light, warm Temps and good airflow. Then you just wait for it to respond.
