I think the flower is collapsing... I wonder if it self-pollinated? Or for some other reason the plant didn't have the strength to maintain it - it's still a fairly small plant. If that's the case, great that you grabbed pix while it was perky. Sometimes it just happens...

Both flowers are doing it. It's my first cattleya bloom and I had high hopes for it to last at least a few days. It just opened overnight last night.

It's still a young plant. First blooms sometimes do go off, and go on to do fine in subsequent years. My usual mantra, "Patience!"

The best part is knowing I'm giving this plant what it needs to be healthy. There is another new growth which may incite a repot into a larger container.

Nice! This may just be one of those orchids that partially closes in the evening to open again in the morning. That habit tends to stabilize once the flowers mature. It is more common with Dendrobiums, but there are some Catts that do that too.

After 21 days the flower has faded dramatically. This plant is under very high light. The plant shows no signs of it being too much, but I wonder if it has anything to do with the fading?

The fading may well just be what it does... I have a B. nodosa hybrid, Bc Tetradip, that opens with very pink/lavender segments, that fade to white in a week or so except for veining in the lip, and then the flowers last for weeks beyond that. Both of these are the same flower, one newly opened and the other a week later. It may last for 6 weeks or more in its "white form".
