L. anceps, fma. coerulea, 'Elizabeth's Eyes' AM/AOS
L. anceps, fma. coerulea was at one time considered variety veitchiana. Now the correct designation is horticultural form veitchiana, since color alone does not qualify for variety status.
The history I have been told of this plant, is that Jim Rose of Cal-Orchids saw it blooming at Silva Orchids in NJ. He bought it for breeding, and gave it the clonal name for Ms. Taylor's eyes. He has released divisions over the years, but it is still somewhat closely held.
Over the summer I came across a mother division, from a grower in CA. I could not resist it, and it is now the first of my many anceps to bloom this season.
It came in with two leads, and promptly produced a 3rd - plus one of the leads sent out another new growth, so it has 4 flower spikes in total. Needless to say, I couldn't resist a little toothpick work, so now we have to see how this one breeds.

Beautiful!
I have a L anceps coerulea myself, growing very well, but never had any flowers yet. Its quite a big plant already. I guess im keeping it too warm.
One time i will get it making flowers for me!  |

I don't know. I have used pollen onto another plant, and I have also selfed it. The flower I selfed has collapsed, which is promising, but it does not mean much unless the pod matures and produces viable seed.

It's an old thread, I know, but since there is an Elizabeth's Eyes on eBay, I'm wondering if there's an update on whether that pod produced viable seed? |

The pod aborted before maturing. This is not a good sign, but it does not necessarily mean that the plant is not fertile.

what a great piece, and a great blooming! I remember seeing crosses from this cultivar so maybe it is fertile. maybe even 4N? I don't know if this one is related to 'Fort Caroline', but I believe that many of the really nice veitchiana cultivars are accidental 4N plants from mericloning 'Ft Caroline'

I believe that it is 4N.
However, as I have heard the story, 'Elizabeth's Eyes' was selected from a population of seed grown plants at Silva Orchids by Jim Rose on one of his trips to the East.
