Thanks for joining us Shade (and all the other visitors that came in to visit and enjoy the pics with us) - and for the wonderful remarks.

It's summer time here now - and buds are really developing in some orchids over here. The season is starting here now - the summer season.

Just adding one extra pic captured this morning - with some more nice line art for us.

Hey SouthPark, this is my sole purpurata - flowering at the same time as yours even though I’m about 2000 kms south of you.

I was hoping for the same pure colours on the petals/sepals as yours but it wasn’t to be.

I bought this from Australian Orchid Nurseries when they were doing a line in ‘cool temperature orchids’. I bought it back in 2017 as a tiny seedling of two well known forms. It’s taken this long to first flowering.

Unfortunately the rain and the slug plague got to the flowers.

I also bought from them a purpurata crossed with Laelia grandis (second photo) - not pretty but a novelty and also a slug victim and first flowering. Also a purpurata v anceps cross which grows well and flowers profusely but unfortunately owes little to the purpurata parent and just looks like another anceps.

It’s a shame they no longer do their cool temperature selection as these sorts of plants are just about impossible to buy here now.

I envy your climate for growing orchids but when I visited FNQ years ago I couldn’t take the heat and scampered back to NSW.

Cheers

Arron ----- thanks for sharing those excellent pics of your purpurata and the hybrid. Both look fantastic. The dash of pink in the petals is a very nice feature. The various shapes and individuality is incredibly nice.

The purple lip in your pics really catches the eye. Absolutely loving the trumpet/tube shape of the lip too in these sorts of orchids. And also the nice petal shapes!

Thanks for mentioning AON too! I purchased some juvenile Den. Flinders 'Green Grub' from them on ebay. Not sure if that will flower up here in NQ. But that's ok ------ they're at least growing just fine here. I bought a Den. Australian Artist from them too ----- no particular cultivar though. Growing just fine here too ----- may not flower though, as I think (maybe) they require some long time cooling or something for flowering. But even then --- mine are just juveniles haha.

Thanks for your post again Arron! Beautiful flowers seen in your photos.
