Interesting discussion.
In various orchid societies, I have seen a lot of plants grown very successfully in pots. However, with my watering schedule, that simply does not work.
From my supplier, they come in 2" pots with a few bark nuggets. I have to move them to mounts with a sphagnum base, and then they do fine.
