Totally agree DV! The breakdown of the ancestors seen in online resources says approximately 26% dowiana. A significant amount. I had seen the breakdowns for orchids on some sites, but had never known the method they use to get those ancestry proportions. The amazing trancy pattern of dowiana flowers is very nice.

Thanks Bayard! You too! 'Coral' was certainly born in USA! Also extremely nice to know that you acquired this plant - and that flowering you showed was really outstanding - it was remarkable, as the form was amazing, and the colour lines in the throat was so well developed and pronounced.

Coral is really nice. And one orchid (among your other nice ones) that I really enjoyed seeing photos of - it was a couple of years ago - was Rlc. Memoria Ralph Placentia 'Toreador' --- where you won the outstanding and prestigious award. We may not have that one here in Australia! It was wonderful to see.

Really looking forward to the next flowering of your 'Coral' too!

That’s a real beauty, SouthPark! This thread and a post by Akhenaten spurred me to reach out to SVO and order a dowiana today!

Thanks for letting me know about the National Orchid Day! I didn't know about that one for USA before! Really nice to know!! I only just noticed that AOS also sent out an email (which I didn't see before until a moment ago) about this occasion! Would be very nice if we had that in Australia too! Wonderful initiative over there!

Thanks for mentioning you ordered a dowiana! That is a fantastic one. It is outstanding how you look after the orchids in CO! I didn't realise in the past that there was a nursery in Louisville. Amazing work! SVO is definitely going to send out a nice dowiana.

One extra photo with more colour variation in quite strong sunlight - captured this morning.

Such great colors! I read the dowiana intensify purples when crossed with purple flowers...pretty cool. I was actually down at Fantasy Orchids last month and have a couple plants from them. They’re a tad pricy and the kids working there are a bit pushy but they have great stuff. Looking forward to what Fred sends out!

Haha! Pushy kids hehe. Nice to hear you've actually been there! I just took a look at some preview pages of their orchids a moment ago - Fantasy Orchids, and can see what you mean! Could be due to needing to provide heating or something during the winter. You get real winter there!

Fred has been to Australia before, and came to a few cities to do some great talks and attend orchid events. I haven't met or talked to him in person before - but would be awesome to just see him in person doing one of his excellent talks about orchids. Also awesome that you're getting a dowiana from him. As Fred likes to say ----- good growing Dorchid!

I noticed a pair of flowers with lighter pink colours too. The water was from the heavy rain last night - the strong winds blew the water onto my orchids and flowers!

Maybe different temperatures during bud development generates those different shades of pink, red etc.
