Cattleya guttata rare color varieties (out of season bloomers)

Just wanted to share some cool first blooms of a pair of imports from a couple years ago. These will eventually acclimate to blooming later in the summer. Both are true C. guttata, however these are the lisa or sem pinta varieties.

The first is a bronze variety. It opens with a touch of magenta on the lateral sepals but over a couple of days has darkened into a deep and solid bronze color. The second is a cream yellow color with white column and a very attractive flush of pink on the lip. The smell is incredible.

I can’t wait to see these develop and enjoy the large clusters of flowers typical for this species. Hoping to self and treat for tetraploid conversion in the next year or so.

They are both really beautiful. Particularly fond of the bronze coloration. For conversation are you using colchicine?

Both are interesting. However:

• While some nurseries (& countries) are quick to announce new varieties, most are more properly defined as color forms.
• It is not a proper variety, unless there is a formal publication in a scientific journal.

Thank you for this! I was using variety in the colloquial form rather than the taxonomic. I totally see how using this term improperly leads to confusion. My mistake.
