They were very nice and let us wander around to our hearts content. The only place that was off limits was the breeding GH. I think it's definitely worth a visit when you're on the BI.
I need to get to H&R.

Im hoping to move back to the BI after I graduate (this May!!). Ill definitely check out Carmela, especially if they now have 6 greenhouses!! As for H&R, I havnt made my monthly trip for the past 2 months.... , I might have to check em out!! lol Of course, Im heading to Maui this May for a week, so maybe I should save my pennies for Tropical Orchid Farm or EOoM..... Sorry, now Im just rambling!

EOoM is awesome! I was there in 2004 and they were soooo nice. I wasn't really "into" orchids yet. Purchased a couple for my son who was. They have all their flasks out where you can see them. Haiku is a gorgeous spot too. If my husband didn't get island fever so bad I'd love to retire there. I'm trying to get back to Maui in 09.....we'll see if that timeshare exchange goes though. If not 2010 for sure.

I havnt been to EOoM, but I have ordered a lot from them and they were always great. Next time you are on Maui, check out Tropical Orchid Farm. I was absolutely blown away by their facility and the incredible quality and professionalism they had. I hold H&R up as my model for what a "perfect" orchid facility should be (or as close to perfect as possible!) and TOF is the only place Ive seen that fully matched H&R's facilities in terms of quality, cleanliness and novel species to choose from. Definitely a "must see" nursery. As for your husband's island fever, I got over mine after the first year, with only minor relapses after that ! When it happens my girlfriend and I just hop on a plane to Maui, Kauai, BI or any of the others. Now we have a supperferry that can transport cars too! After almost 6 years in Hawaii, I have to say I will NEVER live anywhere else !

Thought you guys might be interested in seeing a second bloom from this plant. It seems to be able to mature new growths pretty quickly, and I was quite surprised to see it was going to bloom again so soon after the first cycle. I think the form is much better this time. The flower opened up all the way and it's not as contorted looking as the first flower. It still won't mature two buds at once. It aborts one right away. Maybe when it gets bigger I'll see two at once. The white area just above the tip of the lip will eventually become more lavender as the flower ages. I would highly recommend this as a great beginner plant.
