Cattleya amethystoglossa
In this show & tell, I take a look at Cattleya amethystoglossa. I compare a diploid vs. polyploid, discuss judging, breeding lines, care, and a few of my favorite vendors. Enjoy!

Is it your observation these need more water than other Cattleyas? I bought a 4n seedling from SVO last year. I've been watering it like the rest of my Catt seedlings. The others are all growing fine, but the amethystoglossa became wrinkled, and its last shoot dried up. The roots I can see are all in excellent shape.

Excellent examples of one of my favorite bifoliate cattleya species, Steve. They're all fabulous.

I wouldn't say they need more water, but they are less drought tolerant than unifoliates. They don't require a hard winter rest. Maybe that's the issue?

Thank you, Steve! I've also got a rubra that might bloom this time next year (from Floralia) and I plan to order a coerulea and an aurea from Floralia on this year's order.

Out of curiosity, how expensive are amethystoglossa in the US?
The only one I ever saw in person was €200 for a blooming size plant

They're not cheap! My preferred American vendor has their current list here: http://hrnurseries.com/downloads/RetailList030221.pdf
They're in the process of retiring, so their plant offering is much smaller than in previous years. An amethystoglossa in a 3" pot (3 years from blooming?) is $25. I think a mature, blooming sized plant would go for $80 at a very minimum. Most likely they would sell for more.

Steve, I've had a warm winter in my sunroom. I've watered and fertilized all the Catt seedlings and they've continued to grow.
Mr Fakename - my seedling in a 3" pot from Sunset Valley Orchids was $25 in July 2020.

Just last week I bought a Cattleya amethystoglossa, it should arrive later in the week.
So these comments and the video will be most helpful.
My amethystoglossa plant cost AU$20 I ordered 2 other plants at the same time with delivery of the 3 costing $15 total.
The plant is described as tubestock, but the photos did look bigger, possibly because of the photography angle.
I will post a photo and better idea of size once it arrives here.
