Excellent blooms. The colors are great. How is the scent? The plant I have of this cross has flowers that smell wonderful, kind of like an old-fashioned garden rose scent. But a friend of mine has one that definitely has the not-so-great Cattleya bowringiana scent. So maybe there's so variability in which species genes dominant from one cross to the next?

You certainly could grow catts like that Bayard - or certainly would be able to!

Thanks for describing the scent SM! The description of old-fashioned garden rose sounds nice. I'll do some sampling for a scent and will definitely let you know whether the scent is pleasant or not.

Your plant is a 'Cannizaro' too, right SM? Is your friend's Porcia a different cultivar?

Actually, sorry but I have Porcia, not Portia. Perhaps that's why the blooms of my plant have a better scent than my friend's PORTIA. He confirmed that his tag does show bowringiana X labiata. The tag in my plant's pot just says "Catt. Portia" with nothing more indicated.

But now he feels vindicated that his plant "should stink" (based on the bowringiana parent), and that somehow I've been "cheating" by comparing the two over the years and supposedly "implying that something's wrong with my catt!" Oh well, my mistake--and I did apologize.

SM ----- that's absolutely no problem at all. It was great that you brought up the subject of scent - which is an interesting one. The sun's coming up now - so will be taking some scent samples (and will report back)!

Also - I have to apologise about my spelling in the thread title/topic --- inadvertently writing 'PorTia' ----- instead of Porcia (ie. should correctly be Porcia 'Cannizaro'). I got a mix-up in the past (and even recently) - because there are sites out there that links the cultivar name 'Cannizaro' to PorTia (while there is actually no 'Cannizaro' cultivar for PorTia).

Title fixed...

That's a plant that needs lots of space. It's a beauty.

Thanks for your help again Roberta!

For the last flowering, there was one flower that had the rabbit ears (pic link).

But this time ------ one of the flowers has done the wind-sail thing (fused upper sepal and petals). This has been seen in some orchid pics on the internet --- but is always nice and interesting to see when it happens.

I only noticed this fuser case only this morning.

SM ----- I sampled the scent this morning ------ quite feint - but maybe just wrong time of day or the scent hasn't developed as much just yet. But I could smell some perfume - and in agreement that there's no unpleasant scent there. I will definitely keep sampling though. The slight breeze probably didn't help this morning!
