Cattleya walkeriana 'Kilauea'
Default Cattleya walkeriana 'Kilauea'

I bought this division a few months ago for $35 bucks on ebay from Steven Christofferson. It had a new growth forming and which surprisingly was a flower spike. Very unusual to get a flowering from a division but I'll take it- I suspect the flowers came out a bit small and of worse shape due to the circumstances.

This is one offspring from Harry of H & R nursuries between "Sakura Snowball" semi-alba and the wild collected "Divina" which is a tipo flammea type. There are a number of other people who have posted offspring of this cross on orchidboard over the years including Harry himself. Later today I will try to embed other expressions of this cross that have been posted here so that the differences between each flower can be appreciated.

thank you for that, I'm interested to see what comparisons you come up with!

So are you well into the walkerianas then?

I had a collection of a bunch of different orchids with a lot of cattleya. This year I got rid of most of my hybrids and bought species and some hybrids with an emphasis on fragrance. Cattleya walkeriana has kindof bitten me because its fits well in the goals of my collection. Having decent success with them. I also have been collecting a lot of Cattleya schilleriana as well.

You'll notice that 'Divina' has a very strong effect on the shape of its progeny. Typically, it adds a very starry shape to its progeny.

Great colour, and the labelum looks unique to me.
