Default Cattleya Brabantiae ‘El Toro’ AM/AOS

Second flowering on a tree fern mount. Parents are aclandiae x loddigesii. Probably a tetraploid judging by the full, overlapping petals.

Beautiful pink and white and contrasts!

Bayard - the resolution of your image link is fantastic already. The photo-bucket link currently isn't working though. Just have to re-link maybe.

These wonderful colours always reminds me of ----- Click Here.

This particular sort of pink and white flower is just a pleasure to see.

That's quite nice, Bayard. I've recently been getting into spotted flowers and aclandiae. Looks like you got the good of both worlds.

Beautiful Catt Bayard! I love the spots, and the huge flower size. Do you plan on having a chromosome count done at some point to confirm that it's 4N?

I have one aclandiae hybrid (a noid though) and really love it. I actually have C. Brabantiae on my wishlist, but it's been hard to find anything other than large seedlings here.

Does anyone happen to know where the name Brabantiae comes from? I'm curious if it has anything to do with the Brabant region of the Netherlands, where I work.

It could well be only due to that Brabant region ----- as it appears that the only word so far seen on the internet is linked to that region:

In the pink coloured region

Hi and thanks for the comments!
SouthPark - Like candy!
Camille - I wouldn’t have the chromosomes counted. Just an observation based on other images seen on the Web. This hybrid was registered by Veitch in 1863. It might be informative to know what was going on at that time between the UK and the Netherlands.

Howdy all,

The Duke or Duchess of Brabant is the title of the heir apparent to the Belgian throne, the equivalent of the Prince of Wales in the UK.

There is a tea rose, 'Duchesse de Brabant', from the 1800's that is still very popular. I suspect that her ladyship (one of 'em) was fan of horticulture and the hybrid was named for her.

The King of België is the proud owner of a mammoth conservatory complex open to the public for a week or two each year, to remind us how the other half lives.
