Do you think cypress mulch could be a good substitute overall for orchiata? Here in Lake Charles there are no orchid/tropical suppliers. Our local nurseries have been damaged by the recent storms. I visited one looking for a few common supplies and they had no clue what I was talking about!
Another question, where do you get your ecoweb. I did the Google search and came up with one supplier who is out.
Thanks for your help.

Yes, pure cypress mulch is a good substitute for orchiata. I got a giant box of ecoweb from Ray Barkalow during a sale he had to get rid of the stuff out of his inventory. Unfortunately, I don't know where to get any more, which is fine with me because I think I have a lifetime supply with the amount I currently have!! lol

On another note, Mary Richardson is an orchid friend of mine in Lake Charles. Do you know her?

Actually, I don't know any other growers in Lake Charles. An introduction would be much appreciated, if that's possible. I was in Austin during Hurricane Laura. If I had known about the OB at the time, maybe we could have arranged a meet & greet.

Looking good! No brown places (what I'm experiencing with some of mine)! Cute little root tips growing right along.

They do look excellent, Steve. Good information, too, about the cypress mulch. Thanks for posting pictures and an update.

I've got another group of seedlings that have their lower leaves brown. They're still growing so I'm not too worried about it.

Thanks for the prompt to to get an update.

You should definitely get a flask! Just make sure you ask the seller about the age of the seedlings so that they are ready to be deflasked and you don't end up with a bunch of tiny plants not ready for the real world. Marni Turkel has great flasks and she'll actually deflask them for you and send over a pile of perfect little plants.

If you want to know who sent me the flask not ready for public consumption, shoot me a PM. I have spoken to a bunch of other people with similar experiences when buying from the same vendor.

Why not post this info on the vendor feedback forum? Could save some heartache for some.

Once upon a time I would have done that immediately. Seems like the resulting drama is not worth the effort though. Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age lol
