I'm a "What can I get away with?" grower, grow lots of orchids that are marginal for outdoor growing. But this one I definitely wouldn't grow that way...It's B. nodosa x C. (L.) purpurata... the former is pretty much warm-growing, the latter will tolerate some cold. But even at my house, which is more temperate than northern California, I'd still think that outdoor growing would be pushing the envelope on this one a bit too hard.

35F / 1C is too cold for this plant unless you're a master grower who really understands what you're doing.

I'm no master to this hobby. Just started 9 months ago. I was looking at the parentage of the Bl. Morning Glory and was thinking of this hybrid can be cold tolerant like the parents.

C (L) purpurata is pretty durable, though your low temperature is still pushing it... depends on how long the low temperature lasts and how much it warms up during the day. B. nodosa I grew outside for quite a few years (while occasional lows are cost to freezing, most of my winter nights are mostly above 40 deg F/4 deg C.), I got maybe 2-3 flowers a year... it survived but didn't grow all that well. When I moved it into the greenhouse during the winter, every summer it's covered with flowers for several months. So my conclusion, B. nodosa isn't all that much of a cool grower.

You should be able to grow most orchids, except the warmest-growers, outside in summer for sure, probably spring and most of fall as well. (Generally Phalaenopsis does better indoors all year, but that leaves LOTS of orchids that can be grown outside most of the year, just maybe crowd the house for the winter)
