Rth. Dal's Emperor 'Michelle'
This nice yellow flower began to open yesterday - not fully opened yet. I also photographed it next to a matured Rth. Free Spirit (cultivar name unknown) flower - which was originally fairly light yellow coloured - but now tending to orange coloured after some aging.
Above : without camera flash
Above : with flash
Rth. Dal's Emperor 'Michelle' - still opening
Above: Rth. Dal's Emperor 'Michelle' (left), with a Rth. Free Spirit (right) - similar theme
Above: Rth. Dal's Emperor 'Michelle' (left), with Rlc. Brunswick Gem 'Coral' (right) - size comparison
Above: Fully opened - the bright canary yellow is one of the appealing features. The actual flower is really quite a bright canary yellow.

Pure sunshine. I love the mini-Catts... one can have so many more of them in the same space as one big one, and they tend to be more forgiving as well.

Totally agree Roberta! I noticed online that SVO has the amazing Rth./Pot. Dal's Emperor 'SVO' ! I don't think we have that one in Australia. Have you got a 'SVO' ? !!!

I don't have that particular plant, but I have lots of Sunset Valley Orchids creations... I have the good fortune of living about an hour and a half's drive from the nursery, but even easier, several local orchid societies frequently buy raffle-table and auction plants from them. So over the years, lots of these little gems have followed me home. Most of these mini-Catts are equally at home in the back yard of relatively frost-free temperate locations (like most of the California coast from San Francisco south, and I'm sure most of the Australian coast as well) and on windowsills everyplace else. A lot of them bloom more than once a year, just as a bonus.

That is definitely awesome Roberta ----- about the living not too far from SVO. That's a real paradise situation!
I haven't been to anything like an SVO style nursery before. But I'm imagining it would be orchid wonderland over there.
Absolutely agree about the bonus about getting flowers more than 1 time a year. Those little gems you got are lucky ones. Definitely in very good hands!

Know exactly what you mean Roberta!!! haha
Thanks for mentioning Andy's Orchids. We once had an orchid nursery that was open to the public all week in our city, but this was many years ago now. That one isn't around anymore unfort! It was a great nursery. The only remaining ones in our city are call-in-advance ----- pre-scheduled visit. I've never been to one. I should support the local ones, but just found it easy to order online or by email order from nurseries from around Australia.

Actually, Andy's is also a "call in advance" place most of the time. Within the last few years, he has been holding Open House weekends about 3 times a year, and it so nice to be able to wander at will and spend most of the day there. But it does take a little pre-planning. Worth the trouble.

That place must be impressive Roberta. Spend most of the day definitely sounds like a sizeable place, and more than 'just a few' goodies there. I just saw online some photos of a few areas of that venue - Andy's Orchids. Fantastic. Definitely an orchid world.

Andy's orchids is about 5 or 6 greenhouses and shadehouses over around an acre, absolutely crammed. Andy claims 7000 genera and 700,000+ plants and I can believe it. Since I mostly go for the cooler growers (things are arranged by temperature requirements, mostly) I never even make it to the warm house. One of the benefits of seeing the place is to observe where things grow - the tags have a lot of cultural information, but if a plant starts out with the expectation of needing warm/intermediate conditions but Andy finds that it can grow cool, the computer does't usually get updated but if I find it in the shadehouse, I know... I also learned by seeing what's done there, that "winter rest" doesn't have to be particularly dry... most species with the reputation for that requirement are in the general population, and get watered (but being mounted, dry quickly)
