I smelled a durian once before. I ate some ----- no problem with flavour. The smell is not unbearable or nasty in my opinion. Just not any regular type of smell hahaha. I'm pretty sure that at least some people won't like the smell, as I know where they're coming from.

Many hotels in Asia have signs prohibiting bringing durian fruit into the rooms.

I have heard of a real case, where my colleagues/friends told me that somebody once popped pieces of durian in the microwave oven - in Australia. The smell permeated out during and after the microwave cooking process, and pretty much took out the entire floor of a medium sized building.

The person (from overseas) was asked to not ever repeat that performance. It was his lunch, and he was visiting from overseas. I wasn't there at the time to experience it. But enough people told me about the event, which obviously made a significant negative impression.

I can understand the need for those hotel signs you mentioned - in asia.
