Some plants are reluctant to produce more than a single new growth at a time. If I want a division from such a plant (with 6-7 pseudobulbs in a line), I simply cut the rhizome with a clean razor blade (while the plant is still in the pot), so there is at least 3-4 PBs in the front, and at least 3 PBs in the 'backbulb' division.
This forces the BB division to activate one of the dormant 'eyes' and produce the extra new growth (without disturbing the roots).
